The NBA Draft is upon us, and college students across the nation are gearing up to leave behind the dorm life in favor of a professional basketball career. Logically speaking, you would think that most eyes would be on standout players from the Virginia Cavaliers, the National Championship team of 2019, or even the runner up Texas Tech Red Raiders. But that is not the case, as the number one pick is Zion Williamson, the kid who broke the internet by busting out of his Nike sneakers in the middle of a game.
But who exactly will get first grabs at Zion Williamson? The daft round order has been released, and the New Orleans Pelicans, who have had a rough season with a record of 33-49 and being only two spots away from being dead last in the Western Conference, have the first draft pick. Now, there is a chance that they won’t pick Zion Williamson, but those odds are not great. However, experts are fearing the consequences of the Pelicans getting ahold of Williamson. Being only 18 years old and only having completed one year of college, Williamson is quite young and underdeveloped. There is a high chance that the Pelicans are seeing him as a franchise saver, when in reality this is a kid who needs superb coaching to get him to his highest potential.
Regardless, Williamson is the one who decided to neglect the college lifestyle in favor of the draft, and he was aware of the dangers of being a number one draft pick. Who knows? Maybe the Pelicans will invest in his future and develop him as an athlete rather than just trying to get him to save their franchise.
