Obviously as many of you know, I’m a die hard Eagles fan. I’ve lived in the area my entire life and being a fan of this team is a right of passage and been that way since I was born. We’ve come to that time in the year where the Birds go out and hope to get better. They have a lot of needs. Here are my thoughts pick by pick:
Round 1, Pick 21: Tee Higgins WR, Clemson– I’ll be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade up and go get Jerry Jeudy, but no way for me to know. They must take a wideout and Higgins fits the profile perfectly. He’s a big kid at 6’4 who can go up and steal the football. He has great stride down the field which sets up big plays and can use his size to create mismatches everywhere. I see a lot of AJ Green in him. Hopefully without the injuries.
Round 2, Pick 53: Trevon Diggs CB, Alabama– Face it, even after acquiring Darius Slay in the off season, the Eagles badly need another corner. They moved Jalen Mills to safety and Avonte Maddox is more of a slot player. Diggs, the brother of Stefon is a terrific and instinctive CB with great size. He’s a former receiver so his ball skills are high level, and his ability to read routes quickly are what set him apart from a lot of guys. If they were able to land him here it would be a total steal.
Round 3, Pick 103: Antonio Gandy-Golden WR, Liberty- A kid with innate talent and strength. Did 22 bench press reps at the combine, which for a WR is wildly impressive. His strength allows him to create a ton of YAC and he has great hands. Average almost 18 yards per catch last year. Birds add another big time wide out and toy for Carson Wentz.
Round 4, Pick 127: Evan Weaver LB, Cal- With the departure of Nigel Bradham, the Eagles must address the linebacker position. Weaver in a smart kid with a ton of football IQ that I think can quickly lead a defense. He led the country last year in tackles and has a bulldog mentality. He’s also instinctively patient and seems ready to prove he belongs. I really like this kid, he fits this culture and locker room well.
Round 4, Pick 145: LaMichael Perine RB, Florida- Eagles are all of a sudden kinda short at RB, and it’s important they succeed here. They need a guy who can run the ball with physicality something neither Miles Sanders or Boston Scott does. He runs with purpose and will knock your block off, plus I love his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He’s a guy who can add a lot of depth to the position and contribute, plus he plays special teams.
Round 4, Pick 146: Lucas Niang OT, TCU: We need depth at the tackle position. Niang is a gigantic guy at 6’6 320 with a lot of potential if he can fight off injury worries. Off season surgery will turn a lot of teams off but the Birds may get some value here in Niang. He obviously will have time to develop and doesn’t need to come in and play right away. His football IQ is high and is really solid in pass protection. His physical ability to get down field will allow him to excel also in run blocking and when playing higher end pass rushers in college. he played well.
Round 5, Pick 168: K’Von Wallace S, Clemson: Wallace can play safety and some nickel corner. He’s another physical kid who loves to hit people and will really bother quarterbacks. He was terrific at reading zone and can attack from the safety position in blitz packages. With Rodney McCleod getting up there, its time to grab some depth and let Wallace get his feet wet. He led Clemson last year with 10 pass break ups.
Round 6, Pick 190: Jeff Thomas WR, Miami: A water bug player with unbelievable athletic ability. Character issues will derail Thomas, but he could be a nice steal for the Eagles to use in certain packages and in the return game. He can create big plays through crossing routes and or jet sweeps and can be a fun project for Dougie P. It’s time the Eagles found an electric player in the return game. Thomas could be it.
