This series started at the end of March and came to its conclusion this past week and honestly I’m still reeling from it. Dorktown, the series on SB Nation’s youtube account did a magnificent job explaining the sheer weirdness of Seattle’s ballclub. From the fiery beginnings of the team and the misery of the first few decades to the Glory days of A-Rod and Ken Griffey Jr to the pits of the 2000s and legendary career of Ichiro.
The two narrators Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein lay down the history of the M’s so dramatically and elegantly that you find yourself rooting for them. Alongside their well thought out and honestly hilarious storytelling, they use charts and graphs and stats to illustrate the oddities of the Mariners, while eerie music plays in the background.
The thing I love most about this series though is how well they encapsulate loving a team unconditionally. Several times they highlight the beauty of loving a team or a sport regardless of wins and losses, and every time it brings a tear to my eye.
All I can really do is tell you to watch this. Pop some popcorn, grab a soda, and hunker down in front of your TV or computer for a few hours. It’s worth the watch, it’s worth the time.
Episode one is right here.
