UFC Vegas 29: Chan Sung Jung vs Dan Ige | DieHardMMA Previews
By: Clint MacLean (@DieHardMMAPod)
UFC 263 was a WILD ride with a ton of unexpected results and a lot of people got burned by it. UFC Vegas 29 is on its heels with a much much lower level roster, so expect even more of the unexpected. I regularly talk about how the underrated fight nights end up having some of the best betting opportunities and the best action. This week will be no different and the action should be off the charts except the betting opportunities are thin.
Chan Sung Jung (-110)
- 34 years old
- 16 – 6
- 88% finish rate
- 8 Wins by Submission
- Height: 5’7
- Reach: 72’
The Korean Zombie is a fan favorite with one of the coolest names in the game. The Zombie lives up to his fight name by walking his opponents down, taking everything they can throw at him, and staying in their face. Coming off a loss; where the world was surprised by the improvements Brian Ortega made in his time off, the Korean Zombie has his work cut out for him. Forever among the ranks of the contenders, the Zombie always fights the best the UFC has to throw at him and if he ever wants to get that strap he is going to need to get a win on Saturday.
Dan Ige (-110)
- 29 years old
- 15 – 3
- 60% finish rate
- 6 Wins by Decision
- Height: 5’7
- Reach: 71’
Dan Ige is in the same category as The Zombie. This man has faced some of the best that 145 has to offer and he continues to show up and put on amazing performances making him somebody the UFC fans love to turn in for. Ige is coming off of an incredible KO win over rising prospect Gavin Tucker. It took Ige just 22 seconds to dispatch his opponent and riding that momentum Ige is looking to re-establish himself as a valid contender for the belt.
Dan Ige and Chan Sung Jung are virtually identical from a statistical standpoint and that is reflected in this betting line being a pick ‘em. Chan Sung Jung lands 4.15 significant strikes per minute and absorbs 4.01 putting him in the take a punch to give a punch category. The Zombie has shown off some serious power over his MMA career racking up 6 KO wins including a devastating one over UFC legend Frankie Edgar.
Dan Ige averages 3.95 significant strikes per minute absorbing 3.36 which has him giving slightly less output than the Zombie and out-striking his UFC competition on average just a slight bit more than the Zombie. These two men are very aggressive and like to use their hands. With comparable striking stats, we need to look at the level of competition for these two men. Dan Ige’s best recent opponent has to be Calvin Kattar who just recently lost to former champion Max Holloway. Other names on Ige’s record are the previously mentioned Gavin Tucker, Mirsad Bektic, and Edson Barboza.
The Korean Zombie has faced the likes of Frankie Edgar, number one contender Brian Ortega, Yair Rodriguez, Renato Carneiro, and the legendary “prime” Jose Aldo. You have to give Chan Sung Jung the edge when it comes to competition level and he will have a slight physical edge with a 1-inch reach advantage. On top of that Chan Sung Jung just recently made the move to Fight Ready. If you have been reading my articles for any amount of time then you know that one of my absolute favorite MMA gyms is Fight Ready. They work wonders and physically transform fighters who enter their doors. With how close this fight is statistically, but the slight edges going to The Zombie and the fact that the man is dedicated enough to changing camps at this stage of his career moving to a gym like Fight Ready I have to give it to him. You can make arguments for either man in this fight and it is extremely close, but I have to take that small edge with the Zombie.
