The NFL regular season is closer to ending then starting. It sure goes fast doesn’t it? A couple of tidbits and stats may surprise you as we head into the stretch run, plus my thoughts as to who wins the whole thing RIGHT NOW.
-Finishing in the red zone has been a problem for a lot of teams. 12 different teams have a TD percentage in the red zone under 50 percent. It’s also surprising to hear some of them as well. New England, New Orleans, Kansas City and San Fran are all struggling to put 6 on the board when it matters most.
-Last year, Kansas City struggled in stop the run giving up 5 yards per carry. This year it’s been one of the same, actually it’s been worst. KC is giving up a terrible 5.2 yards per carry to the opposition. If this team wants to beat top teams like the Ravens or others in the playoffs this must get better.
-Offenses that can’t establish the run generally don’t win. Through ten games the 4 teams that are at the bottom of league in rushing yards per game are also the worst teams in the league. Atlanta, Cincy, The Jets and Miami all are under 80 yards per game on the ground. This is bad and its showing in the win/loss column
-There is ONE undefeated team left in the league, The Niners. A big reason for that success is the red zone defense. They are tops in the league in lowest opponent red zone touchdown percentage. Teams are scoring a TD on just 31.25% of RZ trips. This defense in all aspects has been terrific allowing a league low 241 yards a game and just under 13 points per game.
-Too much loyalty? Sometimes in the NFL, its a business. Adam Vinateri has missed six XP’s on the season and 5 field goals. If he was any other kicker in the league, he’d be out of a job. Indy is really hurting itself keeping him around. Time to start working out new kickers, maybe if anything it will light a fire under the veteran.
-Another way to lose a lot of games is turnovers. The Giants lead the league so far with TWENTY FOUR giveaways. They have been reckless with the football. QB Daniel Jones hasn’t helped as he leads the league with NINE total turnovers himself in NINE GAMES. One of the reasons they are 2-8.
