Gilbert Burns tests positive for Covid-19 and yet fight fans are rejoicing. Why? “Gamebred” Jorge Masvidal has decided to step in on 1 week notice to challenge current Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 251 on Fight Island. I think I can speak for all fight fans when this was my first reaction.
This comes off the heels of some testy negotiations between Jorge and the UFC where Dana White claimed that he does not force any of his fighters to fight. That is the reason in my opinion why Gilbert Burns initially got the title shot to begin with. Sure he beat an old Demian Maia and shopworn Tyron Woodley, but to say people were more excited for that fight than the potential matchup of Jorge Masvidal I don’t agree with.

If you need to know who Jorge Masvidal is, look no further than this tweet.

I mean this man fought in the streets of Miami in an underground fighting ring for years before finally getting his just due and respect after a hell of a 2019 in knocking out Darren Till, stopping Ben Askren and he capped his year off with a fantastic showing against Nate Diaz.
Do I think he can beat Kamaru Usman?
That is the million dollar question. He has devastating knockout power and can finish fights with any of his limbs. He is a walking perpetrator of violence. The biggest disadvantage is this is extremely short notice, we do not know if Jorge had a proper camp since he made such a firm stance that if he was not going to get paid by Dana then he was not going to fight. Evidently corona fast-forwarded those plans and Dana was forced to pony up the cash to solidify UFC 251 as the PPV event of the year.
How Good is Kamaru Usman?
Kamaru Usman is a bad, bad man. We saw it in his last fight against Colby Covington in a bout that exclusively took place on the feet where he was able to take Covington’s best shots and keep pushing forward. The fight came down to a winner take all 5th round it seemed and he put the pedal to the floor and turned up to finish Covington in a bout that lived up to all the immense hype and then some. Prior to that Covington fight, he dominated Tyron Woodley which shocked many but he was able to use his size and physicality to bully Tyron all around the cage and win a clear decision.
This is a MMA dream fight, the only issue is the short notice of the bout and what effect will that have on both combatants. I do know one thing and that is that no matter who wins, we have to give credit to both fighters for getting this fight made on such short notice. And if you are a fan of MMA, you must watch this event this upcoming Saturday.
