Game 2: Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics (7 pm on ESPN)
The Miami Heat look to take a 2-0 lead as they face off against the Boston Celtics in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Game 1 was amazing, and if every game is going to be like that, we are all in for a great series, so get your beer and popcorn ready. Game 1 went into overtime, and the Heat ended up winning 117-114. Goran Dragic had the most points for the Heat with 29, and Jayson Tatum scored the most for Boston with 30. The Miami Heat came back from a 14 point deficit to win game 1 in what looked like Boston was going to run away with it, but the Heat had other plans and won in overtime. With game 1 going into overtime, I expect a lot more defense in game 2, so let’s get right to my pick for this game.
The Boston Celtics are a defense-first team. The Boston defense is ranked #2 when it comes to points against per game. They rebound the ball great and limit teams to one shot per possession instead of two or three. The Boston Celtics are also ranked #2 when it comes to 3 point percentage per game at 34%. The Celtics play great defense against the pick and roll and against the 3 point line. They make you take tough shots, and they don’t ever give you anything easy. Not only against the 3 point ball are the Celtics good at guarding, but it is anywhere on the court. The Boston Celtics defense is ranked #4 when it comes to field goal % against. The under is 8-2 in the Celtics last ten games overall. The Celtics know if they play good defense, it will give them the opportunity they need to win any game. Especially against a team with a winning record like the Miami Heat have. The under is 7-2-1 in the Celtics last ten games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. You can’t beat a good team without playing defense. Another reason I think the Bostons defense is going to play strong is that both teams are coming off of just one day’s rest. The under is 7-1 in the Celtics last eight games playing on one day’s rest, and I expect the same results tonight.
On the other side of the ball, we have the Miami Heat. They love to play good defense as well, and it all starts with the way they rebound the ball. They are very good at rebounding on the defensive side, allowing less scoring opportunities for the other team. The Miami Heat are ranked 3rd in defense when it comes to rebounds per game. They box out very well and don’t give up a lot of 2nd chances. The under is 7-3 in the Heats last ten games overall. They are playing great defense in the bubble, which is one of the main reasons they are in the Eastern Conference Finals. They are only letting up an average of 2 more points a game than the Celtics, which means both of these teams know that defense wins championships. The under is 7-3 in the Heats last ten games after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game. That shows that they bounce back very well after an average night on defense. The coaching staff for the Heat is great, and I expect a big bounce back from their defense here tonight, and we all know without a good defense, how are you going to stop the other team from scoring. Well, both the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat know how to play defense, so lets fire away on this total!
We also have RLM (reverse line movement) on this total, and I love to follow that factor. The total for this game opened up at 210. The public is hammering the OVER, yet the line has dropped to 208.5. Well, if the public loves the OVER at 210 so much, why would Vegas move the line to 208.5 and make the line even better for the public? It’s because Vegas and RSP are on the same side, and we are going to hammer the UNDER in this game.
