My Pick In Mid July To Win Super Bowl 54
Written by Big Man on Campus on July 16, 2019
It’s July 16th and we are all itching for football… it’s so close we can begin to taste it. As a sports bettor i am constantly spending the summer preparing for the next season and it’s time I start talking about my pick to win the Super Bowl.
Many people tend to wait until training camp and into the preseason, but i just had to move on my squad NOW. I took the Colts at 14/1 to bring home the Lombardi Trophy… lets break it down.
Last year the Colts had a nice campaign, they won 10 games, won a playoff game and took steps forward. The goal has really been getting Andrew Luck back healthy and successful again, improving the defense and takes steps forward under Frank Reich. They did all 3 of them last season and the future this year and beyond is palpable in Indy.
Offensively I’d expect this team to eclipse what they did last year. They were among the best offenses in the league and at times Andrew Luck was flawless. They improved bringing in speedy receiver Devin Funchess and 4.3 burner Parris Campbell in the draft too add to a group that features one of the best in the game in TY Hilton. They have one of the best tight ends in the game in Eric Ebron, who last year flourished with Luck and had the best season of his career by far with 750 yards and 13 TD’s. The run game improved and only looks up as well with Marlon Mack. The addition of Spencer Ware should provide depth and stability. Under previous regimes, the offensive line was a major issue. Keeping Andrew Luck upright and healthy was a constant problem and it had to be fixed. Slowly but surely through the draft, The Colts now have one of the best offensive line groups in the league. Last year, Luck was sacked on just 2.7% of his dropbacks, an insane number. This offense top to bottom is fierce and should feature plenty of fireworks with one of the best QB’s in the league. Last year, they were 5th in the league scoring 27.1 points per game, this year I expect them to push 30!
The Colts have gotten back into prominence by being one of the best teams in the league in the draft. The talent they have grabbed over the last few years has almost exclusively come in the draft. You succeed in the draft, you get better. It’s that simple. Darius Leonard was one of those home run’s, he become quickly one of the best players in the league and anchors a defense that continues to improve. Indy last year was very good against the run giving up under 4 YPC and Leonard led the league in tackles at 163, nearly 20 more than the next closest. The secondary continues to get stronger and the safety group is particularly strong with Clayton Geathers and Malik Hooker. I loved what they did in the draft grabbing Temple corner Rock Ya- Sin, he was my favorite corner and player in the draft, a mauling tackler and great nickel corner that grew up as a wrestler and had GM’s drooling over his willingness to jump routes and use his wrestling background as a tackler in the nickel. They drafted some really solid depth at LB, I love the edition of Ben Banogu out of TCU. Banogu is a great edge rusher with great awarness and feet. He will help.
The big move of the offseason was adding veteran Justin Houston to this DL. Houston has had 52 sacks in the last 5 seasons and when healthy is still as good as it gets. Throw Jabal Sheard on the other end and this line is really good. All in all, i think they will continue to take a major step forward defensively and continue improving.
The schedule is manageable, and I wouldn’t be blown away if they grab 13 wins. I think 12-4 is very possible. The win total of 10 is laughable… the schedule is tougher, but Indy is better… Andrew Luck will win MVP and the Colts will lift the trophy when it’s all said and done.
