Pistons vs. Magic NBA Pick
The new-look Detroit Pistons visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. What’s the right NBA pick for this contest?
Detroit Pistons (19-37) vs. Orlando Magic (23-31)
Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 PM ET, Amway Center
Pistons Lose the Trade Deadline
The Pistons are just five games out of a playoff spot but they still decided to trade their starting center Andre Drummond to the Cavaliers. What they got in return for Drummond was underwhelming to say the least. The Cavaliers sent veteran point guard Brandon Knight (minus-6.9 Box Plus/Minus), backup center John Henson (minus-1.1 Offensive Box Plus/Minus) and a second-round pick to Detroit.
Knight and Henson average 29.3 minutes per game combined and they combine for 9.9 points… How can these players be the return for a star-caliber center like Drummond? He averaged 17.8 points, an NBA-best 15.8 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.7 blocks in 33.8 minutes over 49 games with the Pistons this season.
While Andre Drummond’s (minus-1.3 Offensive Box Plus/Minus) numbers on the offensive side of the court didn’t really do much for a reeling Pistons squad, they should have gotten a lot more for him.
Pistons Drop Third Straight
The Hornets had lost five games in a row but they beat the Pistons 87-76 in Detroit last Monday. The Pistons have now lost three consecutive games and nine of their last 11. Thon Maker led way for the Pistons with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Bruce Brown added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Shooting 35.4 percent and turning the ball over 21 times for 24 points.
Pistons point guard Reggie Jackson summed the game up perfectly. “If you look at the box score, the first thing you see is the points off turnovers. We lost that battle by 14 points and lost the game by 11, so that’s a huge difference.”
Magic Explode in Second Half Against Hawks
The Magic had lost eight of nine overall and five straight at the Amway Center but a 79-point second half and a season-high 42-pooint fourth quarter helped them beat the Hawks 135-126 on Monday. Aaron Gordon finished with a team-high 26 points, Nikola Vucevic had 24 points, nine rebounds and nine assists and Evan Fournier added 22 points. Terrence Ross also shined with five 3-pointers as part of his 21 points off the bench.
Orlando was 50-for-95 (52.6 percent) from the field and 18-for-38 from beyond the arc. The 18 3-pointers were a season-high and this was their highest-scoring game of the season.
Betting Trends and Prediction
The Over is:
6-0 in Detroit’s last six games following a double-digit loss at home
6-0 in Detroit’s last six games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points
8-2 in Detroit’s last 10 games following an ATS loss
14-5 in Detroit’s last 19 games following a straight up loss
11-5 in Detroit’s last 16 games playing on one days rest
10-2 in Orlando’s last 12 Wednesday games
5-2 in Orlando’s last seven games against a team with a losing straight up record
Derrick Rose (plus-3.3 Offensive Box Plus/Minus) missed Monday’s game against the Hornets with a hip injury but he is expected to play in Orlando. D-Rose could be limited after sitting out the last five games and he might come off the bench but I like this game to go Over the total if he plays. Rose is by far the best player for the Pistons and his presence changes the complexion of the entire team. How will the Pistons stop Vucevic?
