Big Man On Campus Jeff Nadu’s MLS is Back Future Bets
By: Jeff Nadu (@JeffNadu)
Slowly but surely sports are coming back in our country. The thing is around the world, soccer has been back, and as of Wed July 8 it will be back in America as well as the MLS returns. They are playing a pretty cool World Cup style bracket in Orlando FL. They will be in a bubble and one team FC Dallas will not be participating. Each team will be in a variety of groups, each group has 4 teams other than one which has 6. Here are the futures I bet on who wins the whole thing.
Atlanta United 8/1
I think in the quote on quote Eastern side of the groups there are a lot of solid teams. The team that I keep coming back to is Atlanta United. They obviously are on the wrong side of this bubble due to not having the tremendous crowd the usually have but the side is legit. I know Josef Martinez is one of the best players in the league and hes out with an injury but upfront with a burgeoning star in Ezequiel Barco and a key new young addition in Emerson Hyndman this attack will keep coaches up at night preparing for. One thing I also loved about Atlanta United last season was the defense. They were one of the better defensive units in the league and are led as well by one of the best goal keepers in the MLS in Brad Guzan. They also added notable Argentinian defender Fernando Meza. That’s big news as he’s been very good for years in that countries league and Mexico as well. Atlanta United is my pick to win the whole thing.
Seattle Sounders 8/1
The defending MLS champions are obviously one of the clear favorites. They should be, they are stacked on both sides of the ball. They are terrific up front and in the midfeild with guys like Nicholas Lodeiro and the Brazilian Joao Paulo. They should create plenty of scoring options and be one of the better goal scoring outfits in the league. They did lose some quality in defense last year, but guys like Kelvin Leerdam are there to anchor a side that should be quite strong again. Their group isn’t particularly strong and they should be able to win it. Obviously one thing that hurts Seattle is not having that great crowd, but each team is in a unique situation and with the talent I think they are a team to pay attention to and wager on.
LA Galaxy 16/1
A lot of people aren’t talking about the Galaxy and I’m not sure why. I think I know why, people don’t love this defense and I get it they weren’t good but this year I expect a better go of it. I like Pipo Gonzalez as he’s a solid old school Costa Rican defender and I think Rolf Feltscher will have a bit of a resurgence. The big story is this group going forward in attack. I think they are as talented as anyone in this tourney. Chicharito is as good a player in this league and is Golden Boot material especially with Carlos Vela not playing in this tourney for LAFC. 16/1 is way too much value on a team that will only improve defensively and score goals for fun.
