In this gender-flipped comedy remake of, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels — also a remake of a 1964 Marlon Brando and David Niven comedy, turns the tables on the men. This time around Rebel Wilson plays Penny Rust, a crass, small-time Australian con-woman cat-fishing men to make her money. After realizing her scam has run its course, she decides to set up shop in the luxurious French Riviera town of Beaumont-sur-Mer, where she gets under the skin of high-class con artist Josephine Chesterfield, played by Anne Hathaway.
This movie follows the exact same story as ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ so keeping up is not difficult to do. In this go around the scam to get rid of the competition, Josephine agrees to mentor Penny, before the two settle on a wager: Whoever is the first to swindle $500,000 from nerdy tech billionaire Thomas, played by Alex Sharp, will get to claim Beaumont-sur-Mer for herself.
Going into this movie, knowing the story lines, we knew Rebel Wilson has some big shoes to fill by comedic genius, Steve Martin, and she delivered! The cons were hooky, the humor is slapstick and crass, but we had a good time. This is definitely a “girls night out” or first date movie.
