Written by on March 17, 2020

As we all know, we are living in unprecedented times. We must be positive, follow the rules and we will all come out of this. Someday we will all look back and have some interesting stories for our grandchildren. As many of you know, i’m a movie guy and with not much to do, movies are a saving grace. Here are some recommendations you must check out! I will add where you can likely find them. Also most of these movies are a bit off the beaten path. You don’t need me to tell you to watch Shawshank or the Godfather.

1.  Gotti (HBO) 1996: To me, mob films are about factual info and this is one of the greatest, factual mob portrayals ever. Armand Assante delivers a perfect role as John Gotti, and you’ll see plenty of familiar faces and great quotes. Truly my personal favorite mob film ever. It’s actually on you tube for free.

2.  Cardboard Gangsters (2017) 4 Irish kids with very little prospects in life enter the drug trade in their Dublin enclave. The problem is that comes with many issues. It won a lot of awards in Ireland and John Connors role as Jason is one of the more underrated you’ll see. It can be found on Netflix, you may need captions as some of the accents are tough.

3.  Shot Caller (2017) Stockbroker Jacob is involved in fatal DUI and goes to prison for the first time. How will he do this time? I can honestly say personally this film is among the best i’ve seen in some time. You can find it on Netflix.

4.  Queen and Slim (2018) A man and woman from Ohio have an awkward Tinder date and as they are driving home, they are pulled over, things happen. Bad things. CinemaScore rated it an “A” on an A+ scale. You can buy it on iTunes.

5.  True Grit (1969) Growing up this was a film I watched many times with my dad. It’s about a young woman and her family whose father is murdered. She enlists a federal marshall to go after the killer, she tags along with him and a Texas Ranger. John Wayne won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for his performance. It’s on most OnDemand services.

6.  The Wannabe (2015) Thomas is a mob sycophant, he meets Rose and they eventually fall into addiction, they begins to rob mob social clubs. It is based on a true story. Marty Scorcese served as an executive producer for the film. Patricia Arquette dazzles as Rose. It can be found on Youtube and Amazon Prime.

7.  The Hurricane (1999) Based on a true story, Rubin Carter is an up and comer in the world of boxing, he is wrongfully accused in the murder of 3 people. He is sentenced to life and it chronicles his life as a young man in Canada takes up his cause. Denzel is absolutely terrific in this role and won a Golden Globe. It can be found on Youtube and Amazon Prime.

8.  Moonlight (2016) I’ve said before this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. It won an Academy Award for Best Picture and rated 98 on Rotten Tomatoes. It chronicles Chiron throughout his childhood, adolescence and adult life as he struggles with his sexuality and home life. He deals with physical and mental abuse as he revisits throughout his life culminating in an awakening inside of him.
